The English Department is very pleased to have hosted City Academy’s very first Poetry Slam competition, which ran from May 2018 and culminated on the 5th July 2018. The theme for the competition, Identity: Speak Your Truth was aimed at providing a platform for students to express the ways they perceive their world. Poetry is a fundamental element of the study of Literature and the competition offered a different way to foster an appreciation for the genre. A total of 35 students entered the competition and students and staff were all blown away by the diverse and very high standard of entries received. We are immensely proud of every student who participated in the competition- it is no easy feat sharing your story in front of an audience! It is quite clear that our young people have a lot to say about their world and their voices are strong!
Students who made it to the second round were given the opportunity to workshop and improve their performances with spoken word artist, Rehema Njambi. After a highly competitive semi-final competition, 12 students made it to the final round of performances which took place on the 5th of July, 2018. The judges were very impressed with the high calibre of poems and performances.
Winners of the night included:
Walid.E as Best KS3 performer
Kai.T in 3rd Place
Jake.H and Tafari.B-M & Lawson.F-S in joint 2nd place.
1st place was awarded to Wiktoria.P in Year 10, who wowed the audience with a stunning poetic performance about her experiences with bullying. Our students have displayed remarkable talent and resilience and we are extremely proud of what they have been able to achieve. We look forward to the next Poetry Slam, which will take place next Summer, 2019.
